Economic Impact of Ball State University on Muncie and Delaware County

This study examines the business impact, local government impact, and individual impact of Ball State University on the surrounding community. The authors combine financial data with surveys from university employees, students, and area businesses to estimate the economic impact and perceived contributions of the university.

The authors project that Ball State's FY 1983-1984 impact on the Muncie-Delaware County business sector was at least $128 million. More than 8,500 jobs can be directly or indirectly attributable to the presence of the university, and area retailers credit about 30 percent of their business to university employees and students.
